Day 5 - Basel Day

Day 5 – Thursday, Mar 26 – Basel Day

I met Don for breakfast in the hotel – he and Laureen had arrived on Wednesday. We just chatted and caught up on many things. We went out for a walk with Laureen a little later in the morning, and then met Mark and Carol at the hotel around 12:30. We were off to lunch at a nearby German pub (at the recommendation of the hotel staff).

Steve had to meet another colleague/friend (Emmanuel Zuber) to talk about the boring stuff while Kurt and Mary arrived mid-afternoon. After everyone was settled, we all had our complimentary welcome drink and collected in the lounge area at the hotel. Next on the agenda was dinner at Fiorentina, a very fine Italian restaurant.

We left the hotel at 6:00pm (1800) for our dinner reservation at 6:30. Mouna (the same person you met yesterday) also joined in order to meet my family. We had an excellent dinner and shared each other’s family stories. My siblings enjoyed talking with Mouna, and she told me she enjoyed meeting my very kind and welcoming family. [Note: I think she was just being nice!] Seriously, she felt very included. 

After dinner we walked home with the intent of preparing for our cruise which started the following day.

Day 17 – Meeting Uncle Ray

Day 17 – Tuesday, Apr 7 – Meeting Uncle Ray We awoke to another even more glorious day – very blue skies and warm temperatures. Finally! Hotel Selys has a spectacular breakfast buffet, including a machine to make fresh squeezed orange juice, and if you want honey, there is a big rectangular chunk of a honeycomb for you to take whatever honey you want. It just oozes out of the honeycomb. I have never seen that before!      Vincent and Severine picked us up at 9:30 in front of the hotel to go to Henri-Chapelle, a very small town in the Belgian countryside with gorgeous rolling hills covered with farmland and dotted with little villages and the ever-present church spire in the middle of the town. When we arrived, there was construction in the front of the cemetery, so we had to park around the side. Day 2 - Arrival Day

  Day 2 - Monday, March 23rd - Arrival day Everyone spent the day recovering from overnight travel and getting acclimated to the new time zone. For me, I did some walking around the Old Town of Basel and reacquainted myself with places I had visited during past trips there. I also scoped out walking times to the Basel SBB train station and restaurant we were planning to go to on Thursday evening when everyone arrived. A stop in the Laderach chocolate shop was a must when I was in the old town square.
